County recommends vaccinations, including HPV vaccine, for back-to-school season | News
County health officials are reminding parents and guardians to put vaccinations on their children's back-to-school preparation list.
With children across the county returning to classrooms, now is the perfect time to review immunization records.

These include DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough), Hepatitis B, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella vaccine), chickenpox, polio, and more.
“This exciting time for families is a great opportunity to get your children up to date on vaccinations,” said County Children's Health Officer Kelly Motadel, M.D., MPH. “Parents are encouraged to schedule checkups with their health care provider to ensure their children are meeting developmental milestones and are ready for a healthy and happy new school year.”
The first week of August is California HPV Vaccine Week
Although the HPV vaccine is not required in schools, it is an important vaccine for boys and girls ages 9 to 13 that can help prevent six types of cancer in adulthood.
“The HPV vaccine is safe and effective and will protect children in the future,” Dr. Motadel explained. “I urge parents and guardians to talk to their doctor about whether to have their children vaccinated against HPV. Getting vaccinated now will prevent 90 percent of future cancers caused by HPV.”
August is also a good time for everyone to review their vaccination records, as it is National Immunization Awareness Month. This annual observance emphasizes the importance of getting recommended vaccinations throughout your life.
