World Hepatitis Day: PAHO calls for expanding access to diagnosis and treatment – PAHO/WHO
WASHINGTON, DC, July 25, 2024 (PAHO) – World Hepatitis Day The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is urging countries to expand access to testing and treatment for viral hepatitis, which affects more than 10 million people in the Americas, but only 23 percent of them are diagnosed.
Of the five types of hepatitis, types B and C cause the most illness and death. In the Americas, they kill between 60,000 and 100,000 people each year. Most symptoms appear late in the disease, when severe liver disease or cancer is already present.
“Hepatitis B and C are chronic, asymptomatic infections that can progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer. The good news is that we have medicines to cure hepatitis C and effective treatments to suppress hepatitis B,” said PAHO Director Jarvas Barbosa. “It is crucial that we intensify our efforts and investments to end this public health problem,” he added.
According to the World Health Organization's 2024 forecast: World Hepatitis ReportGlobally, only 36% of people infected with Hepatitis C have been diagnosed and only 20% are receiving curative treatment. For chronic Hepatitis B, only 13% of infected people have been diagnosed and only 2.6% receive life-saving medication.
Hepatitis B vaccination, included in the immunization schedules of all countries and territories in the Region, has helped to eliminate mother-to-child transmission during childbirth as a public health problem, highlighting the importance of continuing vaccination to prevent new generations of infection.
PAHO marks this World Day with the slogan “The time to act is now!”, highlighting the urgency of accelerating efforts to improve hepatitis prevention, diagnosis and treatment. With a strategy focused on primary care, PAHO is working with countries in the region to develop and implement national policies to eliminate hepatitis, and through its Regional Revolving Fund, to increase access to more affordable diagnostic tests, treatment and vaccines.
The global reference price for hepatitis C treatment is US$60 per 12-week treatment course and US$2.40 per month for hepatitis B treatment.
World Hepatitis Day, celebrated on 28 July, is an opportunity to strengthen the global fight against these diseases, galvanise action and participation from individuals, partners and the public, and highlight the need for a stronger global response.
This day, which falls on July 28th, celebrates the birthday of Dr. Baruch Bloomberg, who discovered the Hepatitis B virus in 1967 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1976 for his contributions to the invention of diagnostic tests and vaccines.
Hepatitis B and C, and mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B, are Exclusion Initiativeaims to eliminate more than 30 communicable diseases and related diseases in the Americas by 2030.
