Doctors seek to learn more about Long COVID
BUFFALO, N.Y. — With the COVID-19 pandemic now a thing of the past, doctors are now focused on learning more about Long COVID.
More than 70 million adults in the United States report having a disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making that demographic more likely to suffer from long-term COVID-19 than people without disabilities.
“We certainly see a significant number of people with chronic issues whose symptoms become even worse with long COVID,” said Dr. Jennifer Abeles, clinical assistant professor and co-director of the Long COVID Recovery Center at the University at Buffalo's Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, “but we're also seeing people who didn't have any previous medical issues suffer with long COVID.”
According to CDC data, disabilities affected include those that impair mobility, cognition, independent living, hearing, vision and self-care.
Abeles said the spread and treatment of Long COVID remains a mystery, and the effort to understand it doesn't stop at the University at Buffalo.
“People from all over the world are doing research from a variety of perspectives. They're looking at patients, looking at blood tests, symptoms, medical history, vaccinations, trying to figure out how all of this interacts and what causes long COVID and how we can effectively manage these patients so they can get back to living productive lives.”
She said treating patients with chronic illnesses and disabilities requires doctors who are willing to adapt, learn and understand the patient.
“When you have someone who's wheelchair dependent, they need the ability to get into the building to receive the care that everyone else can get,” Abeles said. “When you have someone with a cognitive disability, you need to provide that information in a way that they can understand and get the same care. It's all about coordination.”
