Japan sees surge in coronavirus cases

The number of coronavirus infections is on the rise in Japan, and experts are recommending preventive measures over the summer holidays.

The average number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 at medical institutions nationwide in the week ending July 14 was 11.18, 1.39 times higher than the previous week, marking the 10th consecutive week of increase.

By prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture was at the top with 31.75, followed by Saga Prefecture with 29.46 and Miyazaki Prefecture with 29.34. The figures rose in most of the 47 prefectures.

KP.3 type

Atsuo Hamada, a visiting professor at Tokyo Medical University and an infectious disease expert, said the recent increase in infections could be due in part to the KP.3 variant, a type of Omicron strain.

Professor Hamada said, “KP.3 is a virus derived from JN.1, and is the mainstream epidemic not only in Japan but also in the northern hemisphere, including Europe and the United States. There are reports that it is slightly more contagious than other mutant strains. The severity of symptoms is not much different from other mutant strains.”

It is expected that the number of COVID-19 cases will increase until around mid-August as more people travel to summer vacation destinations.
