KKH Center's Early Cancer Clinic Helps Preserve Fertility
SINGAPORE – When Yuana Kamsani was diagnosed with the early stages of endometrial cancer in July 2020, her life was shattered.
The tutor, then 35, had been married for more than seven years and had been trying to conceive, but had advanced cancer of the lining of her uterus and felt her chances of becoming a mother had vanished.
Juana had diabetes and was obese, so her chances of getting pregnant were already low.
She also had a precancerous condition called endometrial hyperplasia, which causes the lining of the uterus to thicken abnormally, making it difficult for her to become pregnant.
“When I was diagnosed with cancer I felt like my world was falling apart. I thought, 'Am I going to die?'” Yuana said.
“Even if I am cured of cancer, will I still be able to have a baby?”
But a specialist clinic at KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) for early-stage cancer patients who want to preserve their fertility is giving women like Yuana hope.
Since 1990, cancer rates in people under 50 have been rising globally, and KKH has seen an increase in the number of women under 40 suffering from gynaecological cancers over the past few years.
These include endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancer.
The hospital said it treated about 80 new patients with gynaecological cancer in 2014, but is seeing more than 100 new patients each year from 2019 to 2023.
Dr Felicia Chin, senior consultant in gynaecological oncology at KKH, said rising obesity rates and delayed childbearing were among the factors behind the increase.
The gold standard of treatment for early-stage gynaecological cancer is removal of the reproductive organs, which means many women must give up their hopes of having children of their own.
Dr Chin noted that advances in cancer treatment are improving survival rates and may allow younger patients to live longer.
“They're definitely thinking about having a family.
“So we're trying to minimize the situation where patients realize they can't get pregnant because they've had their reproductive organs removed,” she said, adding that this is why discussions about fertility preservation are important for this group of patients.
To meet that need, KKH established the Oncofertility Clinic in September 2020. Since then, the clinic has seen around 200 patients, the youngest being 14 years old and the oldest 45 years old.
