Doctors urge following updated vaccination requirements for school year
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – As students head back to school, medical experts want to remind students and parents about health precautions and necessary vaccinations.
John Carter, regional medical director for Roper ExpressCare, said there is always a spike in illnesses and doctor visits at this time of year as schools return to school.
Carter said he has seen a significant increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks and expects those numbers to rise as students return to classrooms and get closer to one another. He expects to see a surge in COVID-19 and strep cases in September, followed by a flu outbreak.
Carter says it's important for parents and children to take preventative measures to stay healthy. This includes good hand-washing habits, good nutrition and getting enough sleep to boost the immune system and give the body the strength to fight off the virus. Carter encourages parents to teach their children to take these important steps.
“Get your kids back on track with nutrition, sleep, and schedules,” Carter says. “Talk to your pediatrician about vaccinations, remind them about hand-washing and other hygiene practices when they're at school, and keep them home when they're sick.”
Carter urges parents to keep their children home from school if they are sick, have a fever or show any other signs of illness, and encourages them to get tested any time they have symptoms. He stressed the importance of getting vaccinated and following state regulations, as vaccinations help prevent the spread of these diseases.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health has made some changes to vaccination requirements for the 2024-25 school year, now requiring:
- Fourth graders receive two doses of the Hepatitis A vaccine, six months apart.
- One dose of the Tdap vaccine after the 10th birthday and before entering 9th grade
- Two doses of chickenpox vaccination by 10th grade
- Three doses of oral or inactivated polio vaccine by 12th grade – at least one given after the child's fourth birthday

Carter recommends connecting with your child's doctor to schedule vaccinations and make sure your child's vaccinations are up to date for the new school year. Carter says his Roper facility offers $25 sports physicals for middle school and high school athletes.
