AI detects breast cancer 5 years in advance, Anand Mahindra responds | India News
Researchers from the Jameel Machine Learning Clinic and MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed a mammography-based deep learning (DL) model that is highly effective at detecting precancerous changes in high-risk women.
An AI system called Mirai is better at predicting the likelihood of breast cancer from mammograms than existing risk assessment algorithms. Business tycoon Anand Mahindra shared a post on X discussing the possibility of AI detecting breast cancer as much as five years in advance.

Many studies have shown the potential of AI in cancer detection, and many technologies are paving the way for the development of new drugs to predict treatment outcomes and prognosis.
Researchers at Duke University in the US have developed an interpretable AI model that can predict breast cancer five years after a mammogram.
Another study published in the journal Radiology showed that an AI algorithm outperformed standard clinical risk models in predicting the five-year risk of breast cancer.
According to Vineet Nakura, Radiation Oncologist, Max Super Speciality Hospital, artificial intelligence It helps pathologists diagnose cancer more quickly and paves the way for doctors to deliver personalized, patient-centered cancer treatment.
Although there are still many challenges to overcome, this technology has the potential to become a valuable asset for radiologists and ultimately save lives.
Science Translational Medicine shared a research article that said risk assessment can be viewed as a predictive task, training models to associate mammogram features with future cancer diagnoses.
“Risk prediction at different time points, the ability to leverage potentially missing non-imaging data (e.g., age and family history), and consistent performance across heterogeneous mammography machines are required,” the article further states.
The deep learning system, designed to assess cancer risk based solely on mammograms, was introduced two years ago by scientists from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Jameel Clinic.
The model demonstrated remarkable validity and comprehensiveness, providing comparable accuracy for white and black women, which is significant because black women are 43% more likely to die from breast cancer.
