Valley fever cases confirmed after Kern County Music Festival
The California Department of Public Health is investigating whether cases of valley fever have been reported among people who traveled to Kern County in May to attend the outdoor music festival “Lightning in a Bottle.”
Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis or “cocci,” is an infection caused by the Coccidioides fungus, which grows in soil and mud in some areas of California.
Lightning in a Bottle took place from May 22 to 27 at Lake Buena Vista near Bakersfield. The music festival was attended by over 20,000 people from all over California, possibly even other states and countries.
How many cases were there?
California Department of Public Health Officials have identified five people with valley fever who attended the festival. Three people have been hospitalized.
The department said there is a possibility of additional cases linked to attendance at the outdoor festival.
The state health department reported that valley fever is on the rise in California, with many cases reported, especially in 2023 and 2024. In 2022, 7,451 cases were reported in the state.
Past valley fever outbreaks have been linked to exposure to dust and dirt at outdoor events or work sites where soil is stirred up, according to CDPH.
What are the signs of Valley Fever?
Valley fever is a lung infection caused by inhaling spores of the fungus Coccidioides and is most common in California's San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While most people infected with Coccidioides do not develop valley fever, the bacteria can infect the lungs and cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, fever, and fatigue. According to the CDC, about 5% to 10% of people who get valley fever develop serious or long-term lung problems.
In about 1% of people, the infection spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body, such as the skin, bones, joints, or brain (meningitis).
Valley fever is not transmitted from person to person or between people and animals.
What should participants and visitors do?
CDPH encourages anyone who visits Kern County and experiences symptoms of a respiratory infection that do not improve or last for more than a week to visit their health care provider and ask about the possibility of valley fever.

How is Valley Fever Treated?
process Mild infections with valley fever may clear up or may not require treatment. However, people with symptoms should see a health care professional who can determine if treatment is needed. There are no over-the-counter medications to treat valley fever. A doctor may prescribe an antifungal medication. Treat illness.
Some people with serious illnesses or certain health conditions that weaken their immune systems may need to take antifungal medications for months or even years, according to the CDPH.
