Bird flu infections on the rise. Federal government recommends influenza vaccinations to reduce pandemic risk.

Officials said they are initiating this seasonal flu vaccination program to protect the health of farmworkers and to reduce the chance of a mix of the H5N1 virus and human influenza, which could pose a new pandemic threat.

We want to do everything we can to reduce the risk of the virus changing through this dual infection and reassortment.”
Shah said health authorities were not considering offering a vaccine against H5N1 avian influenza because the strain has not so far been linked to severe illness or human-to-human transmission.
Seasonal vaccination programs will be established in states affected by H5N1 in both cattle and poultry populations.
No cases of infection have been reported in dairy cows in California, but several poultry farms and wild birds have been infected with the virus in recent months and years.
