Five Valley Fever cases confirmed, suspected to be linked to Lightning in a Bottle festival
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The California Department of Public Health issued a statement to attendees: Lightning in a bottle If you have respiratory symptoms you should see a doctor. Five people who attended the festival have been confirmed to have valley fever..
The festival took place at Lake Buena Vista from May 22-27 and was attended by over 20,000 people.
CDPH confirmed that five people who attended the festival have valley fever, three of whom have been hospitalized.
CDPH said it is possible that additional cases may arise linked to attendance at the outdoor festival.

Valley fever is not contagious and cannot be spread from people or animals to other people or animals, according to a press release from the California Department of Public Health.
According to the California Department of Public Health, Valley fever is an infection caused by the Coccidioides bacteria, which grows in soil and soil in some parts of California. “Most people infected with the bacteria do not develop Valley fever, but the bacteria can infect the lungs and cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, fever and fatigue. In rare cases, the Valley fever bacteria can spread to other parts of the body and cause serious illness.”
CDPH is asking health care providers who see patients with respiratory or other symptoms consistent with Valley fever to ask about travel and to consider testing for Valley fever for patients who report travel.
CDPH said local and state health departments are required to notify CDPH that there have been cases of valley fever among attendees of the music festival.

A representative for Lightning in a Bottle released the following statement to Eyewitness News:
“The California Department of Public Health recently informed us that they expect between 7,000 and 9,000 cases of valley fever statewide this year, with 5,400 already confirmed cases, and wet weather suggesting a significant increase in cases in 2024,” the report said.
Five cases were reported this week as possibly linked to this year's incident as part of California's Valley Fever Awareness Month campaign.
