Potentially deadly valley fever cases emerge after California music festival
The California Department of Public Health is warning attendees of a local music festival about the spread of potentially deadly valley fever among event-goers.
CDPH announced that it has identified five cases of valley fever who attended the Lightning in a Bottle music festival on the shores of Lake Buena Vista in Kern County, California. The event took place from May 22-27.
Of the five reported cases, three have been hospitalized, and CDPH said it is possible there could be more cases linked to the event.
“Valley fever is an infectious disease caused by the Coccidioides bacteria that grows in soil and soil in some areas of California,” CDPH said in a statement. press release. “Most people infected with this bacteria will not develop valley fever, but the bacteria can infect the lungs and cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, fever and fatigue.”
