LA warns travelers at LAX of possible measles outbreak – NBC Los Angeles
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced Wednesday that a case of measles has been confirmed in a non-Los Angeles County resident who traveled to Los Angeles International Airport last Friday while infectious.
According to the health department, the individual arrived at Gate 202 at Tom Bradley International Terminal B on North Atlantic Airways flight Z0711 at 2:18 p.m. on July 26, then traveled to Orange County.
The Orange County Health Department is investigating additional locations of infection within the county.
The Department of Health said people who were in TBIT and Terminal B at Los Angeles International Airport between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. last Friday may be at risk of contracting measles due to contact with the infected traveler. Other possible locations of contact are also being investigated.
In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Orange County Health Department, passengers who were assigned to specific seats on flight Z0711 who were at risk of exposure will be notified of the exposure by their local health department.
The two agencies work together to investigate infectious disease exposure on international and domestic flights to the United States.
Anyone who may have been exposed to measles should check whether they have been vaccinated against measles. If they have not had measles in the past and have not yet had the measles vaccine, they are at risk of contracting measles if they become infected.
Officials said unvaccinated individuals and those with unknown vaccination status who were at the locations between the listed dates and times are at risk of developing measles seven to 21 days after exposure. Infected individuals who have been symptom-free for more than 21 days by Aug. 16 are no longer at risk, according to the Ministry of Health.
“Measles spreads easily through the air, on surfaces and among people who do not take precautions against measles,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Commissioner.
“Measles can be spread to others before you show symptoms, and it can take seven to 21 days for symptoms to appear after exposure. Measles can cause severe illness in young children and susceptible adults. The best way to protect yourself and your family from infection is to get the highly effective measles vaccine,” Davis added.
Common symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Small white spots may appear inside the mouth two to three days after symptoms begin. According to the Ministry of Health, a “measles rash” may begin on the face and spread to other parts of the body three to five days after other signs of the illness appear.
