Valley Fever: All about viral outbreak at California music festival | World News
Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) is an annual music concert held in the Central Valley region of California, U.S. Among other attractions, the festival features musical performances, guest speakers, visual and interactive art installations, yoga classes, and group meditations.
After the show was successfully held in Lake Buena Vista, California from May 21-25, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently released a statement warning attendees that cases of Valley Fever have been linked to the music festival.
CDPH warned that thousands of attendees at the popular outdoor music festival may have been exposed to the dangerous and deadly bacteria.
California officials said five cases of valley fever were confirmed and three people required hospitalization, and health officials believe more than 20,000 people attended the celebrations.

What is Valley Fever?

• Rash (erythema nodosum).
• Fever or night sweats.
• Cough or shortness of breath (difficulty breathing).
• Headache.
If it lasts for a long time, it is usually called chronic pulmonary coccidioidomycosis rather than valley fever. It may have no symptoms or it may cause side effects such as:
• Chronic cough.
• Chest pain.
• Vomiting blood (hemoptysis).
• Weight loss.
• Shortness of breath (difficulty breathing).
Preventing Valley Fever
Unfortunately, if you live in an area where Coccidioidaemia spores are prevalent, it's difficult to avoid breathing them in. Prevention is difficult, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of valley fever.
• Avoid dusty and dirty areas. If you must be in these areas, use an N95 respirator to filter out fungal spores in the air.
• Stay indoors with windows closed during dust storms.
• Gardening, digging and other yard work are all potential sources of exposure to fungal spores.
• Use air filters indoors.
• Wash cuts and scrapes thoroughly with soap and water to prevent skin infections.
What is the treatment for Valley Fever?
Treatment for valley fever depends on the severity of your symptoms and how well your doctor wants to treat it. Your doctor may prescribe treatment to reduce your risk of developing serious illness, or they may recommend that you monitor your symptoms before prescribing medication.
Antifungal medications may be prescribed if you have a severe or persistent infection, or if you have risk factors for severe illness (such as chronic lung disease). In the vast majority of cases, illness from Valley fever is avoidable. Fewer than 1% of people diagnosed with Valley fever die.
