Increase in mosquitoes confirmed in coastal areas
Downing said while not everyone can afford pest control, there are affordable alternatives residents should keep in mind to ward off mosquitoes.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Recent rains have led to an increase in mosquito-related calls to exterminators across the coast, but at-home pest control may not be an option for everyone.

Downing said while pest control is effective at eliminating mosquitoes, he understands not everyone has access to it, but there are affordable alternatives residents can implement at home, such as removing standing water on their properties.
“Over-the-counter medications like OFF are a good, affordable solution,” Downing says, “so if you can keep the mosquitoes at bay by shooting at the larvae and using repellents, that's a really good option. If you have rainwater harvesting devices or dog bowls or whatever, that can help prevent mosquitos.”
Currently, two types of mosquitoes have been observed throughout the Coastal Bend.
“We've definitely seen a lot of mosquito populations with the recent rains,” Downing said. “We have a native species of mosquito called the Asian longhorn mosquito in this area, and then with the recent high winds we've seen a lot of marsh mosquitoes coming in from the south, which are large and very aggressive mosquitoes. So we're suffering from both.”
Dr. Michael Womack of the South Texas Botanical Gardens said residents can prevent mosquito breeding by creating unfavorable conditions in their yards.
“The easiest thing to do is mow your yard – this is really important because mosquitoes tend to stay in tall grass. The second thing is to dump water, which is usually dumped in places you wouldn't think of – plant trays, bowls, things in your backyard or even bird baths,” Womack said.
Womack said there are several tips to keep bugs at bay, from mosquito repellent to the color of clothing you wear.
“Avoid early morning and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active,” says Womack, “and wearing light-colored clothing, especially pastels, will reduce the likelihood of attracting mosquitoes. And of course, use insect repellent.”
