Reddit has acquired the trump card. On Friday, many users visited their favorite subreddit and discovered something unexpected. It was not a coincidence.

An example of these messages is in r/cfb, a college football-specific subreddit. According to Wired, hackers called on people to vote for the president in November, called the coronavirus “Hoax,” and included a list titled “Ten Things Democrats Did Wrong.”

“On behalf of the American people, we urge and strongly recommend that Mr. Trump vote in the 2020 US general election,” read the message from the hacked moderator’s account.

Reddit said it was investigating the case in a Friday statement to Wired. The company suspects the attack was via a compromised moderator account.

“A series of investigations related to a series of destroyed communities are underway,” said a Reddit spokeswoman. “The source of the attack seems to have been compromised moderator accounts. We are working to lock down those accounts and restore the affected communities.”

Gizmodo contacted Reddit for additional information about the incident, but has not received a reply.

It is unknown how hackers could carry out a coordinated attack. As mentioned above, Reddit believes that hacker-targeted accounts gain control and destroy sub-redits. This seems like a credible theory given the messages posted by some moderator accounts.

Nevertheless, important questions remain. How could a hacker take over the moderator account? Was it a password or authentication issue? Or was it a Reddit issue? In other words, did the hacker gain access from within Reddit’s system?

In light of recent Twitter hacks, this new Reddit vandalism probably won’t ease anyone’s security concerns.

Thankfully, the damage done by hackers was irreversible. After regaining control of the subreddit, moderators eliminated the changes, deleted the messages and images, and brought the community back to normal.
