First CWD case confirmed in Washington state

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was confirmed yesterday in an adult female white-tailed deer found dead in Spokane, Washington. This is the first case of CWD in the state.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) said the confirmation was made by Washington State University's Washington Animal Disease Laboratory, which tested the deer's lymph nodes, along with other samples, that were submitted for testing in July. WDFW said it is still investigating the case and will hold a press conference next week to provide more information.

Cases detected through active surveillance

Washington is currently ranked 35th.^Number States where CWD has been documented in wild or captive cervids. CWD has also been found in four Canadian provinces.

CWD is a neurological disease caused by a defect in a protein called a prion that is fatal to infected deer. It can spread from animal to animal and through environmental contamination, making it an ongoing threat to cervids, including deer, elk, moose and reindeer. The disease is not known to be transmitted to humans, but authorities recommend not eating meat from diseased animals and taking precautions when field-slaughtering or butchering cervids.

WDFW said it has been testing for CWD since 1995 and has been increasing testing in eastern Washington since 2021 due to its proximity to known cases in western Montana.

“WDFW has been actively monitoring the area since 2021 as CWD has spread across the country and has recently been detected in neighboring states and provinces,” said Eric Gardner, WDFW wildlife program director. press release“We discovered this case thanks to our monitoring program and are immediately reviewing our management plan and the circumstances of this discovery.”

WDFW said staff are preparing to collect tissue samples from deer, elk and moose within the initial response area to better understand the outbreak and are working with landowners, land management agencies, state and local governments, tribal partners, sportsmen and conservation organizations in affected areas in an effort to limit the spread of the disease.
