What caused the summer COVID-19 surge?
CINCINNATI (WKRC) – As COVID-19 cases continue to rise here and across the country, we're learning more about why the virus loves warmer temperatures.
Apparently, everything from our behavior over the summer to the virus itself is influencing why COVID-19 is surging again this summer.
“Over the past few years, increases in cases have typically occurred in July and August and sometimes correlated with the emergence of new variants,” infectious disease specialist Dr. Steven Blatt said.
The increase in cases this year is likely due to the virus's ever-evolving nature.
Symptoms vary so much that some people end up feeling just as sick as when they first got COVID-19, according to Scott Woods, a family medicine specialist at TriHealth.
“Body aches, fever, fatigue and general malaise are really common symptoms. Most people have upper respiratory symptoms and a mild stuffy nose and sore throat. Some people have gastrointestinal symptoms with mild diarrhea.”
While most people do not currently require hospital treatment, it should not be underestimated that this virus can cause everything from blood clots to respiratory illness in those most susceptible.
Testing is the only way to know for sure that it is COVID-19 and not an allergy, which is now on the rise.
“Things that suggest a virus compared to an allergy would be body aches, extreme fatigue and of course fever, but if you have allergies you typically won't have those symptoms,” Dr. Scott said.
What should I do if I come into contact with an infected person?
“If you are exposed to COVID-19, probably the best thing you can do is protect those around you in case you get sick. In other words, wear a mask when you're around other people and wait and see if you develop symptoms.”
Dr. Woods says if you make it five days without symptoms, you're probably OK, but if you do get symptoms, paxlobux remains your best option to reduce serious complications.
