Attendee at Denver puppy adoption event may have contracted rabies
DENVER (KKTV) – State health officials are urging people who attended a puppy adoption event held on July 20 to call a hotline after a puppy tested positive for rabies.
Moms and Mutts, a Colorado rescue for pregnant and nursing dogs, held an adoption event July 20 at 2721 West Oxford Ave. in Englewood.
Anyone who attended the event was asked to call the health department at 303-692-2700 during business hours or 303-370-9395 after hours or on weekends.
State health officials said one puppy at the event tested positive for rabies and was euthanized. The only way to test an animal for rabies is to euthanize it, but they did not say what led them to believe the puppy had rabies. The puppy was one of 11 German Shepherd-mix puppies at the event.
The National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians has recommended that the remaining 11 puppies be euthanized. Officials said Friday they were contacting the family fostering the puppies to ask them to turn them over to animal control. None of the shepherd-mix puppies were vaccinated at the time of the infection.
Another option would have been to place the puppies in strict quarantine for 120 days, but they deemed this impractical, so instead they decided the best option would be to euthanize all 11 puppies.
Rabies can be transmitted through saliva, usually through a bite, scratch or lick from an infected animal. State health officials said the incubation period can range from a few days to a few months depending on the type of infection, but is usually three to six weeks.
Vaccinated animals may need to receive a booster shot if they become infected, the researchers said.
The last rabies case in Colorado was in 1931, officials said.
