Keeps mosquitoes away in warm weather
Huntington, West Virginia(WSAZ) – If you get bitten by mosquitoes when you go outside in the summer, you may have wondered why.
Some people get stung a lot, and some people don't get stung at all.
A characteristic of summer nights is that when you enter your home, you find your entire body covered in mosquito bites.
“It's so hot, people are going out in the evenings, and we're seeing more mosquitoes at night,” said Linda Salem, a nurse with Valley Health.
Mosquito bites occur when the mosquito's saliva comes into contact with the skin.
“You get a histamine reaction,” she says, “that triggers the reaction and causes the itch. When we're younger and we haven't been exposed as much, the reaction is more severe.”
If you're prone to repeated bites, you might think it's because of your blood type, but research suggests that it's not your blood type, but rather your smell.
“Mosquitoes actually think that it's the smell coming from the humans themselves,” Salem says. “They seem to be attracted to humans who are more active and who excrete more carbon dioxide. Female mosquitoes seem to be attracted to carbon dioxide.”
To keep mosquitoes at bay, Salem recommends using a bug spray that contains at least 10 percent DEET, which can be sprayed all over the skin and clothing.
“Wear long sleeves, long pants and avoid muddy areas in the evenings,” Salem said.
If you do get stung, taking an anti-allergy medication daily and applying a topical hydrocortisone cream can help, Salem says.
Mosquitoes are primarily attracted to wetlands and swamps, which means you're more likely to be bitten during your holiday when the humidity levels are high.
