Health officials say New Hampshire cooling towers cleared of Legionella bacteria
LINCOLN, N.H. (WCAX) – New Hampshire health officials announced Wednesday that efforts to remove Legionella bacteria from cooling towers in the state are underway. Lincoln It has been successful and there is no ongoing risk to the public.
The New Hampshire Department of Health announced last week that five people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease after being exposed to contaminated water from a cooling tower behind the Riverwalk Resort. That number has since risen to seven.
Health officials warned last week that there could be a continuing risk of infection to the public while repairs are carried out.
Officials said Wednesday that after thorough cleaning and testing, the tower no longer poses an infection risk.
Most healthy people exposed to Legionella bacteria do not become ill, but it can be deadly to those with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses.
Symptoms of Legionnaires' disease include fever, cough and shortness of breath.
