Dementia Australia welcomes UK approval of Alzheimer's drug lecanemab
Dementia Australia welcomes the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency's decision to approve lecanemab for use in the UK.
Lecanemab is currently being evaluated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use in Australia and is also approved for use in the United States, Japan, China, South Korea and Israel.
Professor Christopher Rowe, director of the Australian Dementia Network (ADNeT), agreed that it was a welcome move by the UK medicines regulator.
“This is not a cure, but it is a groundbreaking and historic step towards reducing the devastating impact of Alzheimer's disease on the whole community – not only those with Alzheimer's, but their families, carers and health and aged care services,” Prof Rowe said.
“ADNeT hopes that this treatment, combined with other promising therapies in development, will make a big positive difference.
“Lecanemab is a drug manufactured by Eisai that slows the progression of early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloid plaques from the brain. Amyloid plaques play a key role in Alzheimer's disease, and their removal slows the decline in cognitive and daily functioning.”
Although the UK's medicines regulator has approved lecanemab, the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published draft guidelines recommending that lecanemab not be made available through the UK's National Health Service.
Dementia Australia CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan said Dementia Australia was hopeful that lecanemab would be approved for use in Australia.
“While this treatment will not be suitable for everyone, this is a step forward in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and offers new hope for people living with dementia. We hope that Australians will now have the option to access lecanemab where clinically appropriate,” Professor Buchanan said.
This is an exciting time for the field. Lecanemab is not a magic bullet, but it is the first step toward effective treatment.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
