Eau Claire County (WQOW) – A highly contagious respiratory illness is spreading through the Chippewa Valley.
The Eau Claire City-County Health Department announced several confirmed cases of whooping cough in Eau Claire County.
Over the past few months, there has been an increase in whooping cough cases in Wisconsin and the U.S. Medical experts say there are three times as many cases in the U.S. at this time compared to the same time in 2023.
As of Aug. 8, there have been 278 confirmed cases in Wisconsin. There have been 51 reported cases in 2023. Fifteen infants have been diagnosed with whooping cough in the state this year.
Whooping cough can cause a cough that lasts for weeks or months.
Early symptoms of the disease include a slight fever, runny nose, and a mild cough. After about a week, the cough worsens. The cough may cause breathing problems, vomiting, apnea, and the need to take deep breaths.
Your baby may not cough, but instead may stop breathing for a few seconds or appear to gasp for breath.
Whooping cough can affect people of all ages, but it can be serious or fatal for babies under 1 year old. It can cause pneumonia, and about half of babies who get whooping cough require hospital treatment. Doctors say it's important for pregnant women and everyone around babies to keep their whooping cough vaccine up to date.
Health officials said it's very important to start treatment early, and if you have symptoms, ask your doctor to get tested for whooping cough.
To prevent whooping cough and other respiratory illnesses, practice good hygiene: Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, use hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable, and stay home when you are sick.
