IIT-Mandi Team Compares COVID-19 Disordered Proteins

The virus then hijacks the host cell machinery and uses the viral RNA to produce viral proteins in a process called “translation.” Infected cells initiate the production of virulent viral proteins, causing various conditions and symptoms.

It is known that proteins provide both structural and functional features to an organism, and exogenous (viral) proteins can take over the function of human cells.

“In COVID-19, RNA is first translated into proteins that perform a wide range of functions. Because protein function depends on both ordered and disordered regions, the proteome is considered in both ordered and disordered proteins. It’s important to understand the whole thing,” Giri explains.

A set of proteins or proteomes contains both ordered and disordered regions of proteins.

“Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and intrinsically disordered protein domains (IDPRs) have recently been the focus of attention as they have been found to play important roles in various biological processes,” Giri said. Said.

IDP and IDPR are strongly correlated with viral virulence, and understanding the structure and function of COVID-19 can reveal ways to mitigate the effects of infection.

Both structural and non-structural aspects of proteins are fundamental, and their knowledge is of paramount importance in understanding the etiology of viruses.

“We investigate the chaotic aspects of the SARS-CoV-2 proteome, check the prevalence of IDPR in that protein, and shed some light on their disorder-related functions and their disorder-based binding motifs To do this, we used a complementary set of computational approaches, known as molecular recognition,” says Giri.

Regarding the implications of their findings, Gilli added, “Our studies show the functionality of these proteins, other viruses, because many IDPs/IDPRs undergo structural changes in the context of their physiological partners. It creates an important basis for a better understanding of protein interactions, as well as interactions with host proteins under different physiological conditions.”
