Increasing smoking can increase your risk of illness by 30%.

One study found that smoking a heavier smoker once a day could increase the risk of illnesses such as respiratory disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease by more than 30%.
A study by researchers at the University of South Australia associated increased smoking with 28 health conditions: 17-fold emphysema, 8-fold atherosclerosis or arterial blockage, and 6.5-percent lung cancer incidence. It is twice as high.
Light smokers average less than 10 cigarettes per day, moderate smokers 10-19 per day, and smokers 20 or more cigarettes per day are classified as heavy smokers.
The study, published in the journal EClinical Medicine, analyzed the hospital data and mortality statistics of over 152,483 smokers in the UK’s biobanks to determine the impact of increased smoking on disease risk.
Researchers say that the risk of developing respiratory disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease increases with each cigarette smoked.
The association between heavier smoking and emphysema, heart disease, pneumonia, and respiratory cancer was particularly high.
However, researchers have also found associations with many other respiratory diseases, renal failure, sepsis, eye disorders, and complications of surgery and medical procedures.
“Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, and smokers usually die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers,” said Elina Hipponen, a professor at the University of South Australia.
“Despite the decline in global smoking over the last two decades, an estimated 20 percent of the world’s population over the age of 15 is still smoking,” said Hipponen.
Several known smoking outcomes, including stroke, were not identified in the study, and researchers only counted more than 200 cases by health status, the researchers said.
“We only saw how smoking a cigarette affects the risk of disease, at least for a group of people who have smoked in the past,” Hipponen said.
“Other factors, such as when people start smoking and how long they smoke can also affect the health effects of smoking.” PTI
