Schedule workplace health screenings to curb heart disease
More than 130,000 people in England will be offered free workplace health checks over the next six months as part of a new initiative to prevent heart disease.
From September, employees in several industries, including construction and hospitality, will be able to take a rapid assessment to determine their risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
The study is aimed at people aged between 40 and 74 who have no specific pre-existing conditions related to heart disease.
The government says these tests will save the NHS thousands of hours of time and help reduce waiting lists.
The scheme, first introduced in 2009, is an initiative to increase the frequency of NHS health checks.
As well as targeting heart disease, the program also aims to prevent diabetes, kidney disease and even some forms of dementia in adults.
Health Minister Andrew Gwynne said more than 16 million people are eligible for testing but current data shows only 40% have taken it.
“This is especially true for men, who are less likely to receive early treatment but are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease at a younger age than women,” he said.
“This new program aims to reach more people through the workplace and make it easier for people to understand and improve their cardiovascular health.”
Participants will be required to complete a short lifestyle questionnaire, measure their height, weight and waist size, undergo a blood pressure test and take simple blood tests to measure cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
The test also records important information such as your smoking status, family history of coronary heart disease, and cholesterol levels.
These are part of the government's commitment to boosting the UK's economic growth through improved healthcare.
“Health checks can save lives – they can prevent the onset of preventable diseases such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and liver disease,” said Louise Gittins, chairman of the Local Government Association.
Plans have also been announced for a digital version of the NHS health check, with testing due to begin next year.
Councils in Norfolk, Medway and the London borough of Lambeth took part in the pilot.
The initiative is expected to carry out one million checks over the first four years, with plans to then roll it out nationwide alongside face-to-face assessments.
CVD is the leading cause of death and disability in the UK.
NHS figures show that one in four deaths in England are caused by the disease, despite it being largely preventable if people lead healthy lifestyles.
