Gym-goers could soon be seeing special stickers on mirrors at their local leisure centres reminding them to look out for signs of cancer.

It's part of the NHS's body awareness initiative to encourage more people to get an early diagnosis.

Messages, which will be posted in hundreds of Better Leisure centres across the UK, advise people to “know what's normal for you” when it comes to their bodies.

For example, unusual lumps, skin changes, unexplained weight loss or bleeding are things you should report to your doctor.

Not all changes are cancerous, but it's important to check.

The NHS has already partnered with some supermarkets to include messages on products warning people about the early symptoms of cancer. Underwear, etc. And toothpaste.

Detecting cancer early can save lives, says Professor Peter Johnson, clinical director for cancer for NHS England.

If cancer is diagnosed early, when it is not too large and has not spread, there is a higher chance of successful treatment.

“I urge anyone who notices any new symptoms to come forward straight away, which is why it's so important to pay attention to your body, notice any changes that are out of the ordinary and get tested straight away,” he said.

David Bateson, 49, from Bedfordshire, was diagnosed with skin cancer after visiting his GP about bleeding spots on his scalp.

He is now free of the cancer known as malignant melanoma.

He said: “I am testament to how important early diagnosis is. I never dreamed I'd have skin cancer in this part of my head, but it turns out to be the most aggressive type. I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't gone to the doctor then.”
