Experts call for urgent action to protect drinking water
Global water purification technology company Bluewater is calling on governments and water authorities around the world, including Kenya, to take urgent steps to address contamination of drinking water with toxic chemicals, microplastics and other contaminants. The call comes after a global survey revealed a significant decline in public confidence in tap water.
A study conducted by US public health experts from Northwestern University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that this distrust is leading to increased consumption of single-use plastic bottled water, with serious negative consequences for the planet, the environment and the health of the people who live there.
The research results are: Nature Communications According to the Journal, 52.3% of adults in the countries surveyed are concerned that their drinking water will become highly contaminated within the next two years. Contamination levels vary widely, from 8% in Sweden to 78.3% in Lebanon, with 39% of U.S. respondents concerned that drinking tap water could cause short-term harm.
In Kenya, more than 50 percent of people expressed concern about the safety of their drinking water, a significant issue given the country's already limited access to clean water resources: While approximately 60 percent of Kenyans have access to safe drinking water, only 29 percent have access to basic sanitation facilities.
Additionally, about 10 million people in Kenya drink water directly from contaminated surface sources.The survey, conducted among 148,585 adults in 141 countries, including Kenya, using data from the Lloyd's Register Foundation's World Risk Poll, also shows that women, urban dwellers, people with higher education and those facing economic hardship are more likely to expect harm from their drinking water.
The findings highlight the challenge consumers face in assessing the safety of their tap water, as many contaminants cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste.
In Kenya, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes in health focus on the needs of women, girls and vulnerable groups and are aligned with global efforts such as Sustainable Development Goal 6.2, which aims to achieve universal access to adequate sanitation and hygiene practices by 2030.
Kenya is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world and faces the added challenge of frequent severe weather cycles and dwindling natural resources resulting in reduced water supplies for domestic and productive use.
