Coronavirus: Hinckley Care Home Staff “Not Always Wearing Masks”
Special measures were taken for nursing homes where some staff did not wear face masks or wash their hands when in contact with residents.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) announced it had inspected The Limes in Hinckley, Leicestershire in June after being contacted by whistleblowers.
It turns out that half of the staff did not have specific Covid-19 training.
Lestershire County Care, which runs the house, said the issue was being addressed “urgently.”
As a result of a previous test conducted in January, CQC found that the home for people with dementia needed improvement.
But the inspectors now consider it inadequate, and put it in a special step last month.
If the condition does not improve in time for the 6-month follow-up examination, the house may have to be shut down.
According to CQC, the June visit was followed by a report from a staff member who said, “I wasn’t confident in the provider listening to the provider or taking action.”
During the visit, the inspector observed a staff member who said, “I don’t always wash my hands effectively and in between contacting different people.”
The report added: “Staff did not always wear personal protective equipment such as face masks when making direct contact with people.”
According to inspectors, this increases the risk to vulnerable populations during the outbreak of Covid-19.
Training records confirm that “only 46% of staff receive specific Covid-19 training” and “not enough staff to meet or keep people’s needs”. It was
CQC added that if there is often a need for at least one caregiver for every two patients, there may be only four caregivers among the 34 residents.
The staff told the inspectors that they often quit their jobs because they felt “stress and anxiety”.
Staffing concerns arose after Leicestershire County Care Limited threatened to eliminate approximately 100 nursing home staff in a salary and condition dispute.
In May, a care home operator issued a staff dismissal order and provided a disadvantageous contract to care workers to reduce costs.
“The results were so disappointing that high standards of care were not met,” the company said.
We have also worked with CQC and Leicestershire County Council to add this to “improve and maintain the safety and health of our residents.”
