New Hampshire man's life is in jeopardy after testing positive for three mosquito viruses, including EEE

KENSINGTON, N.H. — A New Hampshire man was hospitalized after being bitten by a mosquito. He has now tested positive for three mosquito-borne viruses, including: Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

“He's my brother and he died because of a mosquito and it's so hard,” Angela Barker said, fighting back tears.

Barker's brother-in-law, Joe Casey, 54, is suffering from life-threatening mosquito bites.

Doctors at Exeter Hospital said Casey tested positive for three types of antibodies, including EEE.

“He has tested positive for EEE, West Nile fever and St. Louis encephalitis, but the CDC and infectious disease specialists are not sure which is causing his illness,” Barker said.

Mr Barker said Casey began feeling unwell in early August and now suffers from brain swelling and is barely able to communicate.

“My brother-in-law is not a small person and it is horrifying and heartbreaking to see a loved one as ill as he is, unable to speak, move or communicate for over three weeks,” Barker said.

Casey's family believe he has a long road to recovery but he has the support of his wife Kim and their four children, and they have set up an online fundraising page and have received a lot of support from the community.

“Joe will need long-term care and patient rehabilitation which will mean 24-hour care and we would love to get the word out to help this amazing family,” Ms Barker said.

EEE infection “can happen to anyone”

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that there is at least one mosquito nest in Kensington that has tested positive for EEE, the town has sent out postcards informing residents and the risk level has been raised to high.

Casey's family wants to warn people to be careful.

“To be safe, cover up, put on bug spray. It could happen to anyone and that's the scariest thing about it. Just be careful and take the proper precautions,” Barker said.
