Map showing US states with the highest child mortality rates

A new study finds that child mortality rates are rising across the United States.

Between 2018 and 2022, child and adolescent death rates will increase by 18.8%, more than double the rate of increase between 2013 and 2017. These increases are driven primarily by increases in injury-related deaths, primarily from firearms and overdoses, although death rates vary widely across the country.

“There is reason to be concerned,” said lead study author Eugenio Vargas, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan's Firearm Injury Prevention Institute. Newsweek.

“Firearm-related injuries were found to be the number one cause of death among children and adolescents in 25 states and the number two cause in 17 other states. Motor vehicle-related injuries were the number one cause of death among children and adolescents in 23 states, while malignant tumors and asphyxiation were in the top two causes of death in nine states.”

Overall, the highest child mortality rate was seen in Mississippi, with a rate of 47.2 deaths per 100,000 in 2018, followed by Louisiana and Montana, while North Dakota saw the most notable increase between 2018 and 2022, with a death rate up 65 percent.

Meanwhile, Rhode Island had the lowest death rate and the largest decrease in deaths during this period.

The map below shows the variation in child mortality rates across the United States in 2022, as well as the change in mortality rates from 2018 to 2022.

“This study demonstrates that firearm deaths among children and youth remain a significant and geographically diverse problem in the United States,” Vargas said. “These injuries are preventable, and identifying priority areas can help us better tailor evidence-based strategies, solutions and policies to save lives.”

Earlier this summer, in response to the rise in firearm-related deaths across the country, the U.S. Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health crisis.

“Implementing evidence-based policy solutions is critical, especially for reducing firearm-related deaths,” Vargas said. “In this regard, there is research that highlights the importance of increased firearm safety and environmental changes to improve community safety.”
