Brain tumors and cell phones? No link, report finds
Whether you're an Android user, an iPhone user, or an old-fashioned flip phone user, there's good news about the impact of your favorite mobile device on your health: A study commissioned by the World Health Organization found that mobile phones don't increase the risk of brain tumors.
The researchers looked at more than 5,000 studies published between 1994 and 2022, focusing on 63 papers that included participants from 22 countries. According to a study published Tuesday in the journal Environment International. It found that exposure to mobile phones, cordless phones and broadcasting stations is unlikely to cause brain tumors.
“Almost everyone I know has a cell phone,” said Dr. Manmeet Ahluwalia, chief scientific officer, chief of medical oncology and deputy director at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, adding that the link to brain cancer is a “real concern” for some patients.
How does a mobile phone work?
Cell phones send and receive signals from base stations using radio frequency waves, which the Food and Drug Administration defines as a type of radiation.
According to the American Cancer Society, these waves are considered non-ionizing radiation, meaning they are low-frequency and low-energy. In contrast, high-frequency, high-energy ionizing radiation, like X-rays and radon, can cause DNA damage and lead to cancer.
Ahluwalia said that given the prevalence of cellphones, even a small risk of cancer would be a concern for many patients, especially if there was an association with head and neck cancers associated with cellphone use. But the researchers found no such association.
The FDA said, “Available scientific data do not clearly demonstrate any adverse biological effects from radiofrequency energy.” The recent WHO study builds on this existing evidence.
What the research shows
The 11 researchers who wrote the WHO study said mobile phone use was unlikely to increase the risk of glioma, a type of tumor of the brain or spinal cord.
The researchers also found that cell phones do not increase the risk of noncancerous tumors such as meningiomas, which form in the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and acoustic neuromas, which affect the nerves connecting the inner ear to the brain, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Mobile phones also did not increase the risk of tumours outside the brain, particularly pituitary or salivary gland tumours in adults, or the risk of brain tumours in children.
The researchers concluded that exposure to cordless phones and fixed transmitters, such as broadcast antennas and base stations that serve as hubs for local wireless networks, is also unlikely to increase cancer risk.
Previous large-scale studies had shown mobile phones were unlikely to cause brain tumours, but Ahluwalia said the strength of the WHO study was that it looked at all the studies comprehensively, ruling out possible bias.
“We rely heavily on cell phones in our daily lives,” Ahluwalia said, “and studies like this give us further confidence that cell phone use is not associated with brain cancer risk.”
