As teen e-cigarette use falls, more are turning to the product
Half a million fewer school-age children are using e-cigarettes this year than last, a victory for public health officials who have for years warned about the health risks posed by these nicotine devices.
According to the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey, 1.63 million school-age children used e-cigarettes at least once in the past 30 days, down from 2.13 million a year ago. Teen e-cigarette use has fallen sharply since more than 5 million school-age children reported using e-cigarettes in 2019, leading the Food and Drug Administration to crack down on e-cigarettes.
This year's school-based survey, conducted between Jan. 22 and May 22, found that 7.8% of high school students and 3.5% of middle school students said they had used an e-cigarette at least once in the past 30 days.
According to the survey, more teens have been using nicotine pouches sold under brands such as Zyn and Rogue in recent years. The survey found that 1.8% of school-age children used a nicotine pouch in the past 30 days, slightly higher than the 1.5% who reported using it last year. Nearly half a million school-age children used a nicotine pouch in the past 30 days, more than double the 200,000 youth pouch users in 2021. Among nicotine pouch users, Zyn was the most popular brand, followed by on!, Rogue, Velo, and Juice Head ZTN. More than 85% of pouch users said they used flavored products.
The big takeaway for health experts is that the number of young people vaping has dropped..
In a statement, Brian King, director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products, called the drop in teen e-cigarette use a “landmark victory.”
“However, we cannot rest on our laurels as there is still work to be done to further reduce youth e-cigarette use,” King said.
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra praised the fact that youth e-cigarette use has reached its lowest level in a decade.
“This is a hopeful sign that Americans are beginning to understand the dangers of these products among young people and the marketing that some are using to target children,” Becerra said.
Watchdog: Illegal e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches need oversight
Anti-tobacco watchdogs have praised the decline in e-cigarette use among teens, but they still worry about kids who vape frequently. Among teens who use e-cigarettes, 42% of high school students and 27% of middle school students say they do so frequently or daily. These teens may be ingesting products that are full of nicotine. study The nicotine content of disposable e-cigarettes has reportedly skyrocketed nearly three-fold from 2017 to 2022.
Despite the decline in school-age use, e-cigarette use among U.S. youth “remains a serious public health problem,” due in part to “an e-cigarette industry that continues to relentlessly seek new ways to get kids addicted,” said Yolonda C. Richardson, president and CEO of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
“We cannot let our guard down with more than 1.6 million kids still using e-cigarettes and 42 percent of high school student users reporting frequent or daily use – a strong indication that they are addicted to the high-nicotine products currently on the market,” Richardson said in a statement.
Richardson called on the FDA and other federal agencies to step up enforcement to remove unlicensed e-cigarette devices from the market. While the FDA has approved fewer than 30 e-cigarette products, there are thousands of unlicensed products on the market, Richardson said.
“The nicotine pouches come in mint and fruit flavors that are popular with kids and are heavily promoted on social media, which could tempt young people to use them,” he said. He called on the FDA to closely monitor these products and take steps to prevent underage use.
