Prescribing nature can improve happiness
A study by researchers at the University of Exeter has found that prescribing nature can increase happiness and reduce anxiety.
In total, 8,339 people with mental health needs took part in the study, engaging in nature-based activities such as conservation, horticulture, gardening and exercise at seven project trial sites across England.
Green social prescription means people with mental health problems are referred by their GP or social worker to take part in nature-based activities.
Other activities prescribed as part of the study included outdoor speech therapy, assisted farming and sport.
Before they began nature-based activities, participants' happiness, anxiety and life satisfaction were worse than the national average, according to the report.
Participants said they felt “fun,” “happy” and “calm” afterwards.
Prof Ruth Garside, from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter, said the findings showed green social prescriptions were an “effective way to support people”.
She added: “This is just the beginning, and further investment from Government will underpin the leadership and systems change that we know is needed for Green Social Prescriptions to succeed.”
“But policymakers need to continue to work to understand the needs of local communities, enable a more diverse range of people to connect with nature, and invest in organizations that provide nature-based activities.”
The report, which the university produced in partnership with the Universities of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam and Plymouth, was published on Wednesday for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
