Pediatric COVID-19 vaccine expected to be available in the Twin Cities by mid-September
The updated COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be available to children through most major health care systems in Minnesota by mid-September.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration Updated shots approved A vaccine targeting the Omicron variant KP.2 was announced two weeks ago. Appointments were not immediately available in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
A Hennepin Healthcare spokesperson explained that Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for patients ages 5 and older is beginning to arrive at the facility, with appointments available on a limited schedule starting next week, but it's unclear when the vaccine for patients ages 6 months to 4 years old will arrive.
Pfizer said it has shipped and delivered millions of doses to date to meet demand from wholesalers and customers, with millions more expected to be delivered in the coming weeks. The company told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that deliveries to those under the age of five began this week.
Meanwhile, Children's Minnesota and M Health Fairview have both confirmed they're still waiting on supply but expect it to arrive by the middle of this month. Allina Health also plans to start scheduling appointments in mid-September, according to a spokesperson.
“The COVID vaccine has not yet arrived, but we are hopeful it will be available,” said Dr. Muazi Loh, vice president of care transformation at Minnesota Community Care.
The company also expects an improved version of its COVID-19 vaccine to be available later this month.
“The timing is right,” Law said, and with COVID-19 and flu season fast approaching, he encourages families to not wait too long to get the vaccine once it's available. “I think we'll be able to start vaccinating people by the end of September, early October.”
Because Minnesota Community Care serves uninsured and Medicaid patients, some of its vaccine supply comes from the Minnesota Department of Health.
MDH confirmed that the updated pediatric vaccines have begun being delivered to providers enrolled in the Minnesota Pediatric Vaccine Program.
“I basically just check every week or so to see if there's a vaccine available,” said Eli Best, a Minneapolis parent who has been waiting to see when a new vaccine is available for her children. “As soon as it's available, I'm going to get it for me and my kids.”
