Recognizing financial fraud requires critical thinking and Problem SolvingResearchers have investigated whether financial exploitation among the elderly is indicative of a decline in decision-making ability. The decline in decision-making ability and ultimately succumbing to fraud suggests a decline in cognitive ability. This suggests a possible change in the economic structure of the elderly. brain It may be linked to Alzheimer's disease.

Brain changes associated with cognitive decline

The researchers looked at the entorhinal cortex, which is connected to the hippocampus. MemoryThe entorhinal cortex is closely related to the medial prefrontal cortex, which is involved in cognitive functions. The entorhinal cortex is one of the first areas to show signs of Alzheimer's disease and thins as the disease progresses.

The researchers found that people who make poor financial decisions and are more likely to fall victim to financial fraud have a thinner entorhinal cortex, especially in participants over the age of 70. Study participants did not exhibit clinical cognitive impairment, but they underwent MRI scans to assess the thickness of their entorhinal cortex and took a standardized test called the Financial Exploitation Vulnerability Perception Scale (PFVS) to assess their financial decision-making skills.

The researchers recommend assessing older adults' financial decision-making capabilities as this may be a sign of cognitive impairment, but financial vulnerability alone is not a definitive indicator of cognitive impairment and is studied as one component of a broader assessment of risk factors.
