With peak respiratory illness season just months away, pharmacies across New Jersey are preparing for their annual shipments of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines.
But as the virus continues to spread across New Jersey, they'll be getting the new COVID vaccine first. Here's what you need to know about them.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending COVID vaccinations for everyone 6 months and older in 2024-2025, especially for young children and people 6 years and older, two groups most vulnerable to the respiratory disease.

How many COVID vaccines will there be this year?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved three COVID vaccines in late August.
Pfizer and Moderna have updated mRNA versions of their COVID vaccines that target the new KP.2 strain of the JN.1 lineage, and these can be given to anyone 6 months of age or older.
An improved protein-based vaccine from Novavax has also been approved and targets the JN.1 strain. It is only recommended for people aged 12 and over.
When will a new vaccine be available?
The first orders for the new vaccines are being sent out to pharmacies and other providers.

How much does the vaccine cost?
The vaccine will be free for Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance plans.
The federal government no longer subsidizes vaccinations, so people who don't have insurance will have to pay the cost. CVS is charging $202.
If I got the COVID vaccine last year, do I need to get it again?
The effectiveness of the vaccines weakens over time, and the CDC recommends everyone get a new dose regardless of when their last COVID vaccination was.

When is the best time to get the injection?
Many doctors recommend getting the COVID and flu vaccines by mid-October to ensure protection lasts through the peak of the season and into the end of winter in early 2025.
Is the latest COVID strain already circulating in New Jersey?
Like much of the United States, New Jersey COVID cases and hospitalizations have risen This summer.
The numbers began rising in June and peaked in late August, reaching 589 daily COVID-19 hospitalizations on Aug. 23. Hospitalizations fell slightly Thursday to 510. The overall increase is still nowhere near the peak numbers in December and January, when holiday travel and indoor gatherings helped spread COVID-19.
Severe cases remain rare, with the daily number of COVID patients on ventilators hovering in the single to low double digits for much of the summer.
