University of Arizona researchers seek approval of Valley Fever vaccine for pets
About 60,000 dogs in Arizona get valley fever each year, but that could change if a vaccine developed at the University of Arizona is approved.
Researchers hope the federal government will approve a vaccine by next year so veterinarians can administer it to dogs and other animals that may benefit from the vaccine, even cats and zoo animals that can get valley fever.
The canine vaccine has been in development for 12 years, and data shows it works, said John Galgiani, director of the Valley Fever Research Center.
Valley fever is caused by a fungus that lives in the soil in parts of California and the Southwest. Dogs are more susceptible to the disease than humans because they live closer to the ground and treatment is more expensive. Some families euthanize their dogs when they have valley fever because they can't afford the treatment, Galgiani said.
The disease is debilitating in humans and animals and can lead to respiratory symptoms, joint pain and even death.
The University of Arizona vaccine is the first to address any type of fungal disease and shows a promising path to a human vaccine.
“Half of the cases in the United States are in Maricopa County and we really need to be aware of this,” Galgiani said.
Galgiani's center initially got grants to work on a dog vaccine, arguing that success in dogs would pave the way for immunizing humans. They may now be seeing results: The National Institutes of Health recently awarded contracts of up to $33 million to pharmaceutical companies to begin human efforts.
Galgiani said a vaccine could be available as early as eight years from now.
This will be big news for Arizona residents, where the risk of contracting Valley fever and the death rate it causes are similar to those of polio and measles before the availability of vaccines.
According to the University of Arizona, valley fever causes disability in 20,000 people each year and kills 1 in every 1,000 people who become infected.
But gaining national support for the vaccine won't be easy: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers Valley fever a “rare disease” because it affects a small market, and most cases have occurred in Arizona and California, not on the East Coast.
“Rare diseases are hard to tackle in smaller markets because the return on investment is often low,” Galgiani said. “This will be a huge benefit for us.”
