Measles in North Carolina | First case of measles confirmed in state in six years
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The measles case in a Mecklenburg County child is the first confirmed case in North Carolina since 2018, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) announced Monday.
The child is probably measles NCDHHS said the infection may have been acquired while traveling outside the country.
The parents returned to North Carolina and kept the child at home except for one medical visit, according to the department.
“Measles infection is preventable. Most Mecklenburg County residents are vaccinated against measles and are not at high risk for infection,” said Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Dr. Raynard Washington. “This case further demonstrates the need for all families to keep their children up to date on measles and other childhood vaccinations.”
The NCDHHS Division of Public Health is working with the Mecklenburg County Health Department to monitor the case.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and NCDHHS said a person can catch measles by just being in a room with an infected person for less than two hours.
Measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis, especially in children under the age of five.
“Measles is on the rise both globally and in the United States,” said Dr. Elizabeth Cuervo Tilson, state health commissioner and NCDHHS chief medical officer. “Parents, schools, early childhood education providers and health care providers should all work to ensure their children's measles vaccinations are up to date.”
What are the symptoms?
Measles begins with a fever that lasts for a few days, followed by coughing, runny nose, and conjunctivitis (pink eye).
The rash may start on the face and upper neck and spread down the back and torso, then the arms, hands, legs, and feet.
The rash will begin to disappear after about 5 days.
If you think you or someone you know has measles, call ahead, if possible, before going to a medical facility to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Get vaccinated
Children not traveling internationally should receive the first dose of MMR vaccine at age 12 to 15 months and the second dose at age 4 to 6 years. U.S. residents aged 6 months or older who do not have evidence of immunity and plan to travel internationally should receive the MMR vaccine before traveling.
- Infants aged 6-11 months should receive one dose of the MMR vaccine before departure.
- Children aged 12 months and older should receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, spaced at least 28 days apart.
- Teens and adults who have no evidence of immunity to measles should receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, spaced at least 28 days apart.
