A new school year means new curriculum and, for many, new germs.
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – As students begin their studies in earnest for the Fall 2024 semester, so do their inevitable exposures to illness.

“When they go into new environments, like going to daycare when they're younger, going to elementary school, going back to high school, they're exposed to kids they haven't been around before, and that starts to spread again,” Herrin said. “In terms of colds, certainly young children are being exposed to new things, so it's very common for young children to get sick six to 12 times a year, especially as they're exposed to new diseases and viruses between the ages of 5 and 10.”
New or even similar environments can be the perfect place for bacteria to grow and spread, but Herrin stressed that preventative measures can help limit the risk.
“The best thing parents can do is remind their kids to wash their hands — before eating, after coughing or sneezing, after blowing their nose — any time they should. That's the best way to prevent infection,” Herrin said. “Starting at home will encourage hand-washing in the classroom as well.”
If over-the-counter medications don't work and your child doesn't seem to get better, Herrin says it's time to see a doctor to find out what's going on.
“There are no hard and fast rules, and of course, if your child isn't behaving appropriately and we're concerned, we're happy to come in and examine them,” Herrin said.

“Each classroom is equipped with Clorox wipes, and many teachers have engaged students in daily cleaning routines, including wiping down desks and doorknobs at the end of the day.
