A fourth case of EEE has been reported in eastern Massachusetts.
A man in his 50s from Middlesex County Eastern Equine EncephalitisThis is the fourth case of the virus confirmed in Massachusetts, state officials said.
“This year's EEE season has been particularly active, causing great concern in communities across Massachusetts,” Surgeon General Robbie Goldstein said in a statement. “While EEE remains a rare disease, it has increased risk levels in multiple communities. With warm, sunny weather forecasted for the remainder of the week, we encourage those in high-risk areas to take necessary precautions.”
Goldstein recommended that people in areas at high risk of EEE reschedule outdoor events to evening hours, since mosquitoes are most prevalent between dusk and dawn.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, there have been 91 EEE-positive mosquito samples in Massachusetts this year. Most of the activity has been in Plymouth and Worcester counties, but infected mosquitoes have also been found in Bristol, Essex and Middlesex counties.

DPH said no changes to risk levels were made in connection with the Sept. 9 EEE announcement.
Humans can become infected with EEE through the bite of an infected mosquito. The last outbreak of EEE in Massachusetts occurred in 2019-2020 and led to 17 infections and seven deaths, DPH added. In addition to the four human cases this year, EEE has also been found in two horses.
How to avoid mosquito bites
The agency recommends using insect repellent when outdoors, which should be made with EPA-registered ingredients such as DEET, permethrin, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
DEET products should not be used on infants under 2 months of age and should be used at a concentration of 30% or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under 3 years of age.
People should also wear long-sleeved clothing to protect against mosquito bites, remove standing water from homes and install screens on windows to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside, the state recommended.
