Fourth death in Legionnaires' disease outbreak at New York nursing home
Albany, New York — A fourth person has died in a Legionnaires' disease outbreak at a nursing home in upstate New York, health officials said Tuesday.
Albany County officials announced last week that the first three of 10 people who tested positive for the virus at Peregrine Senior Living in Shaker, Albany, have died.
Albany County Health Officer Maribeth Miller said in a prepared statement Tuesday that two new cases of Legionnaires' disease have tested positive, bringing the total number of deaths linked to the outbreak to four.
Legionnaires' disease is a serious pneumonia caused by inhaling tiny water droplets containing Legionella bacteria that can live in plumbing systems. Elderly people, those with weakened immune systems, and those with certain medical conditions, such as chronic lung disease, are at higher risk of developing Legionnaires' disease.
County officials said last week that it was unclear whether Legionnaires' disease was the cause of death because two of the people who died had been hospitalized for other health issues. “Four people have died from pneumonia” linked to the outbreak, Miller said in a prepared statement Tuesday. County officials did not provide details.
As a result of the outbreak, health officials are working with Peregrine and area hospitals to test and treat people with symptoms and set up water treatment programs. Miller said water restrictions have been implemented.
Peregrine's operators said last week that they are working with state and local health officials to keep residents, staff and visitors safe. An email seeking additional comment was sent to the facility's operators on Tuesday.
