To combat vaccine fatigue, Oregon officials recommend flu, RSV, COVID vaccinations
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) – With flu season upon us, health officials across the Northwest are reminding people that now is the time to start getting their annual vaccination.
Whether it's the flu, RSV or COVID-19 vaccine, some health care workers are noticing a decline in the number of people getting vaccinated, which they're calling “vaccine fatigue.”
It's not hard to find people feeling this fatigue: FOX 12 spoke to multiple people walking in and out of local pharmacies, many of whom said they feel COVID-19 is just over and they don't plan on getting the vaccine or a booster shot this year.
“I'm scared of the effects other people have experienced from getting the COVID vaccine,” Natasha Gomez said outside the Walgreens.
“We don't really know how the COVID vaccine works. I got a few shots at first, and I was infected once, but now I'm immune to it, so it didn't affect me much,” explained Diana Burkey of CVS.
But they're not the only people shying away from getting vaccinated.

“The uptake rates for not only COVID vaccines but other vaccines have been declining over time, which is concerning,” Dr. Glasberg said.
Dr. Katherine Glassberg, who works with Kaiser Permanente Northwest, said this vaccine fatigue is not new.
“I think a lot of the fatigue comes from the pandemic and the fear that it's created, so I want to remind people that these are safe and effective tools,” Dr. Glasberg said.
Federal funding to give COVID vaccines to everyone for free ran out earlier this month, according to the CDC, meaning some uninsured people may be asked to pay up to $200 for a booster shot.
FOX 12 asked Dr. Glassberg, “Do you think cost is playing a role in this vaccine fatigue?”

“Hopefully that won't be the case. Availability will vary by area, but it should be available to uninsured patients,” Dr. Glasberg said.
While many people refuse to get booster shots, the annual flu shot is a different story.
“Maybe a flu vaccine is OK, but a COVID vaccine is not,” Gomez said.
But there are still people who give it their all.
“I'm going to get the COVID-19 booster and the flu vaccine, and my whole family is going to get both vaccines,” Jolene Pyle said outside the CVS.
