Lack of research into long-term effects of COVID-19 in the country: experts

COVID-19 is becoming a nightmare that none of us want to experience again. However, as the world reports on the impact of COVID-19, Long COVID It could have long-term health effects on the population, but few in India seem to be concerned about the impact.

According to a global study, Long COVID patients make up 25-30% of infected people and suffer from symptoms such as “weakness and fatigue, late afternoon sleepiness, depression, mental status and muscle weakness.” Chronic coughs that cannot be detected by X-rays or MRIs have also been reported.

“The National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) should have done a follow-up study, but there seems to be no interest from a scientific or professional point of view,” he said.Even side effects after using the vaccine remain a mystery despite the registry being maintained, Dr Murthy added.

“The number of heart attacks is increasing in the US and clinicians there are blaming it on Long COVID. Hospitals here have data on infected people. There is a need for systematic follow-up as we are likely to know more about other health complications,” said P Redana, professor in the school of life sciences at the University of Hyderabad.

“Long COVID is an issue. Unfortunately, I don't see anything big or systemic going on here. Vaccine follow-up studies have been done and pieces of research have been submitted but we would prefer larger, sustained studies of this kind,” said Rakesh Mishra, former director of CSIR's Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and now director of the Tata Institute of Genetics and Social Research.

Dr Mishra said such studies are crucial as Indians are “immunologically different” due to genetic and environmental factors and therefore there is a need to monitor the population's response to the virus and vaccines. “It is up to regulators and clinicians to take the lead as they may have the data,” asserted the leading scientist.

The only relief is that a long-term study has been initiated that will recruit over 10,000 subjects from various CSIR laboratories across the country and track various clinical and biochemical health parameters. “We hope that this study will continue to be supported for a long period of time as it will be of value to the future of the country's healthcare system,” he added.
