Montgomery County funds opioid treatment center for children in Baltimore
Maryland health officials announced Wednesday they will open the first intensive inpatient addiction treatment center for children and adolescents in Baltimore in years, reflecting dire data showing that even the state's youngest residents are not immune to the opioid epidemic.
In 2014, four young people The number of young people between the ages of 13 and 17 who died from drug overdoses in the state is expected to rise to 19 in 2023.
While that figure is a fraction of the overall overdose toll in the city and state, both cities suffer from a lack of services for children, especially residential programs. The new center will add 15 treatment beds for children under the age of 21 and will be available to children living anywhere in the state.
The program is overseen by the Montgomery County Health and Human Services Department and is funded by funds the state and county recovered from legal settlements with prescription drug manufacturers and distributors.
“In Maryland, young people under the age of 21 lack inpatient treatment options for substance use disorders,” Maryland Health Commissioner Dr. Laura Herrera Scott said in a statement.
“By opening the state's only intensive residential treatment facility for minors, we will address a critical gap in care and provide hope and critical support to Montgomery County and Maryland youth who need it most.”
At the centers, children are monitored 24 hours a day for medical and other needs, receive addiction treatment, reconnect with their families and learn new coping skills, and services aim to be culturally appropriate.
The Maryland Treatment Center was chosen for the new center because it already operates an outpatient substance use treatment center for adolescents in Baltimore and is also licensed to operate an inpatient treatment center.
The center previously operated a pediatric inpatient center, but closed it several years ago along with others across the state because of a high number of cases going through the criminal justice system and low referral volumes, said Meghan Westwood, program director for Maryland Treatment Centers.
She said more referrals will come from health departments, including Montgomery County and Baltimore. Highest The number of overdose deaths in the state.
“We believe we never addressed that need,” she said, “and this will be a key piece of the puzzle.”
The center hopes to expand inpatient services once more funding is secured, she said.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said there is a shortage of services in and around the county and the new center “addresses this urgent need head on.”
