How PATH is helping respond to the growing MPOX epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Of course, digital health infrastructure is only one piece of the puzzle: effective emergency response must be embedded in a responsive and integrated primary health care system.
This must also include education and support for health workers driving emergency response efforts. PATH is leveraging its expertise in strengthening community health systems to increase awareness and case finding for mpox across the Democratic Republic of Congo. Community health workers (CHWs) play a critical role in raising awareness, contact tracing, and linking infected people to care.
This approach ensures that high-risk and remote communities that are easily overlooked are included in the outbreak response.
Through our decades of work supporting and strengthening CHW capacity through HIV, malaria, and maternal and child health programs, the DRC's extensive CHW network is now mobilized to address the current MPOX epidemic. PATH is working with the DRC Ministry of Health to train CHWs in detecting early signs of infection, disseminating public health information, linking cases to local health services, and ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment.
Additionally, with the first MPOX vaccine donations now available in the Democratic Republic of Congo, PATH will be supporting the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo in upcoming MPOX vaccination campaigns.
