More bluetongue cases in northeast Lincoln, control zone expanded
Further cases of bluetongue disease have been confirmed on farms in England, leading to the extension of temporary control zones.
In North East Lincolnshire, two further cases were detected on Wednesday after the first case was confirmed on Tuesday, leading to the control area being widened as part of the Government's disease response.
New cases were confirmed in Essex on Wednesday but there was no change to the area's infection control zone.
Farmer Lindsay Hatton, chairman of Coningsby Horncastle National Farmers Union in Lincolnshire, said the bluetongue outbreak was just the latest challenge in a “not easy year” for farmers.
She said farmers were already experiencing “difficult harvests” and flooding even before bluetongue arrived.
She also said “food security must be the government's top priority” and urged farmers in the county to remain vigilant and follow the rules in force in their controlled areas.
The disease was first identified in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire on 4 September. Confirmed cases in Withernsea.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) established a 12-mile (20km) control zone in East Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire, which is now being expanded.
In the Exclusion Zone there are special rules regarding the transport of other ungulate animals such as cattle, sheep and goats.
Although the disease can be fatal to some livestock, bluetongue poses no threat to humans or livestock and does not affect food safety.
Norfolk and Suffolk were the first counties in England to be hit by the virus, with restrictions imposed after cases were confirmed in August.
