BOSTON — Like father, like daughter? A new study finds that a father's unhealthy eating habits could lead to future heart disease in his daughter.

The researchers University of California, Riverside They fed male mice a high-cholesterol diet to raise their blood lipid levels, then mated them with female mice fed a normal low-cholesterol diet. They found that the female offspring were two to three times more likely to develop atherosclerosis, or “hardening of the arteries,” the main cause of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers said that unhealthy diet, environmental exposures and stress could alter the genetic material in a man's sperm, which could then be passed on to his offspring when the egg is fertilized. It's not clear why only female offspring appear to be affected, but the researchers said men who plan to have children should consider healthy diets to avoid passing on a higher risk of heart disease to their daughters.
