World Sepsis Day 2024: Cwm Taf Morgan University Health Board becomes sepsis-savvy
Every year on September 13th, we join organisations and individuals from around the world to mark World Sepsis Day.
CTM has a long tradition of celebrating the occasion and in 2024 will host a series of events led by the Intensive Care Outreach team and Vanessa Jones, senior nurse in acute exacerbations.
What causes sepsis?
Sepsis occurs when the body's immune system responds abnormally to an infection in the body.
It is a life-threatening disease that, if not diagnosed early, can carry significant patient risks leading to permanent or life-changing sequelae, including organ failure and potentially death.
The burden of sepsis remains a major problem in the UK and worldwide: according to the UK Sepsis Trust, in the UK alone sepsis is responsible for 48,000 deaths and more than 245,000 patients, many of whom suffer long-term health effects.
At CTM, we continue to work to improve sepsis recognition and early treatment.
Sepsis information stands have been set up at each CTM UHB facility to help healthcare workers identify patients suspected to be at risk of sepsis and educate staff on the immediate steps to take for patients suspected of having sepsis.
Today we also discussed the signs and symptoms of sepsis with patients who visited our hospital.
Vanessa Jones, senior nurse in the Acute Exacerbation and Intensive Care Outreach Team, said: “As a health board we want to support World Sepsis Day and highlight the ongoing need for training and education of staff and the public on the recognition and treatment of sepsis.
“By supporting staff to recognise the early symptoms of sepsis, we are giving them more confidence to quickly diagnose and manage it when it is first suspected in a patient. We also want patients and the community to be more aware of the signs of sepsis so we can work proactively to reduce preventable harm and death from sepsis in the future.”
