In August, the third Lancet Committee on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care The study, led by Professor Gill Livingstone, Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry, University of London, found that almost half of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors, starting from early childhood and across the lifespan. Professor Livingstone explains that these risk factors are spread across the lifespan and can be categorised as stimuli (such as being cognitively, socially and physically active), health factors (such as cholesterol, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, eyesight and hearing) and psychosocial factors (such as social isolation and depression).
Importantly, Professor Livingstone points out that there are interventions we can make at any time to reduce the risk of developing dementia. In this video, Professor Livingstone explains how we can reduce our risk of dementia by focusing on the factors that are most easily changeable.
