State health and agriculture officials announced Monday that testing of all dairy cows on 95 licensed farms had found no traces of avian flu.

The Healey administration said after highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in Texas cattle in March, officials decided to test all cattle herds to protect public safety and demonstrate the safety of the state's food supply.

The virus, commonly known as bird flu, has spread to at least 14 states and officials say some infected animals have become lethargic and have reduced milk production, while some infected dairy workers have developed flu-like symptoms.

“The safety of our food supply is inextricably linked to the health and safety of our state's residents,” Surgeon General Robbie Goldstein said in a statement. “We must continue to closely monitor our state's farms to protect animals and public health. This is a great example of how collaboration across government and with communities can lead to better health outcomes and keep our local dairy industry healthy.”

Some samples of pasteurized milk have tested positive for the virus, but the FDA says the milk is still safe to drink.

Administration officials say Massachusetts is the only state to have tested its entire herd and received “100 percent negative” results.

DPH said it was working with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources on the inspection, whose inspectors took milk samples from the bulk tanks in August. The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard also assisted in the inspection.

“Massachusetts dairy farmers take great pride in following rigorous safety procedures and producing the highest quality product,” said MDAR Commissioner Ashley Rundle. “Their hard work protects us all, and these test results show that supporting local agriculture and sourcing food from Massachusetts farms will help keep our food supply strong and resilient.”
